Dollar P/L is quantity times the price change: (exit minus entry) times shares or units. Percent return is usually measured against entry: (exit / entry minus 1) times 100 for a long.
For a short, you gain when price falls. Dollar P/L is quantity times (entry minus exit). Percent is often expressed versus entry as (entry minus exit) / entry times 100.
