It shows how daily returns of major stocks and ETFs moved together, from −1 (opposite) to +1 (same direction). NVDA and QQQ are often highly positive. GLD vs tech names is often weaker or negative in risk-on tapes.
Pearson correlation of overlapping daily percent changes over 1 month, 3 months, 6 months, or 1 year. Missing days are skipped so every pair uses the same calendar.
Two names that print 0.90 are almost the same bet. Mixing in a weakly correlated sleeve (for example gold vs Nasdaq) can cut the size of a single-factor hit. Correlation changes; it is not a hedge guarantee.
