USDJPY Correlation in BoJ Week: Why Yen Crosses Now Lead the Pair
USDJPY is moving with the yen crosses far more than with the rest of the dollar. On ECB reference rates to October 28, 2026, its daily returns had a 0.87 correlation with GBPJPY and 0.85 with EURJPY over three months, but only -0.45 with EURUSD. In January the EURUSD reading was -0.68. The yen, not the dollar, is doing more of the driving.
That matters this week. The Federal Reserve held its target range at 3.75% to 4.00% on Wednesday, October 28, in a 10 to 2 vote with two members preferring a hike (see the Fed statement). The ECB decides on Thursday and the Bank of Japan ends its two day meeting on Friday, October 30. This article shows the full USDJPY correlation table, how the link changed over 2026, what it means for stacked risk in BoJ week, and how to size yen pairs from one budget. You can check the current readings on the free GBPJPY vs USDJPY correlation page and the EURUSD vs USDJPY correlation page.
What is happening to the yen this week
Three things set up the week. First, the Fed raised rates by 25 basis points in September to 3.75% to 4.00%, and before Wednesday's meeting markets were pricing about an 80% chance of another hike in December, according to FXStreet. Second, the BoJ raised its policy rate in September to 1.25%, its highest level in 31 years, and all 16 economists in a CNBC survey expect it to hold on Friday while setting up a hike in December or January. The BoJ also publishes its quarterly Outlook Report at this meeting (see the BoJ meeting schedule).
Third, the yen has been acting as a safe haven again. It gained about 0.75% on the dollar in the week of the AI stock selloff, its biggest weekly gain since early September, and Japan's finance minister Satsuki Katayama said the government stood ready to take decisive action in the currency market, as CNBC reported. Past interventions are published by the Ministry of Finance.
On the ECB fixings, USDJPY fell from 158.24 on October 19 to 156.80 on October 23, then climbed back to 157.96 on October 28 as risk appetite returned. Over one year the fix ranged from 152.17 (October 29, 2025) to 163.91 (July 28, 2026).

| GBPJPY | 0.61 | 0.87 | 0.77 | 0.68 |
| AUDJPY | 0.61 | 0.78 | 0.70 | 0.59 |
| CHFJPY | 0.26 | 0.75 | 0.66 | 0.55 |
| USDCHF | 0.48 | 0.45 | 0.47 | 0.57 |
| USDCAD | 0.47 | 0.41 | 0.36 | 0.36 |
| EURUSD | -0.25 | -0.45 | -0.41 | -0.55 |
| GBPUSD | -0.17 | -0.41 | -0.37 | -0.47 |
| NZDUSD | -0.21 | -0.36 | -0.35 | -0.42 |
| AUDUSD | 0.20 | -0.20 | -0.23 | -0.32 |
How to read it in practice:
- The yen crosses lead: EURJPY, GBPJPY and AUDJPY all sit at 0.78 or higher over three months. A long USDJPY next to a long GBPJPY is close to one trade on two charts.
- The dollar pairs lag: EURUSD (-0.45) and USDCHF (0.45) are moderate. A short EURUSD repeats only part of a long USDJPY.
- One month is noisy: with 23 fixings, the 1M column swings with a handful of days. Over that window AUDJPY and GBPJPY (0.61) still led, while the dollar pairs were all weaker than 0.5.
The 2026 trend: from dollar pair to yen pair
Rolling three month windows show the shift. Each row is the correlation of daily returns over the three months ending on that date.
| 3 months ending | vs EURUSD | vs USDCHF | vs EURJPY |
|---|---|---|---|
| Jan 27, 2026 | -0.68 | 0.71 | 0.82 |
| Feb 25, 2026 | -0.66 | 0.68 | 0.79 |
| Mar 26, 2026 | -0.63 | 0.63 | 0.65 |
| Apr 28, 2026 | -0.73 | 0.68 | 0.33 |
| May 28, 2026 | -0.64 | 0.65 | 0.49 |
| Jun 26, 2026 | -0.54 | 0.63 | 0.50 |
| Jul 27, 2026 | -0.38 | 0.53 | 0.66 |
| Aug 25, 2026 | -0.42 | 0.45 | 0.72 |
| Sep 23, 2026 | -0.51 | 0.51 | 0.88 |
| Oct 28, 2026 | -0.45 | 0.45 | 0.85 |
Two phases stand out. In the window ending April 28, USDJPY behaved like a dollar pair: -0.73 with EURUSD and only 0.33 with EURJPY. From July on, the EURUSD link faded to between -0.38 and -0.51 while the EURJPY link climbed from 0.66 in July to 0.88 in September and 0.85 now. In plain terms, more of the daily USDJPY move now comes from the yen itself (BoJ expectations, safe haven flows, intervention talk) than from the dollar.
You can see it in the daily direction too. Over the last three months USDJPY and GBPJPY closed in the same direction on 48 of 66 fixing days (73%), the same count as USDJPY and EURJPY. Over one year the counts were 176 and 179 of 256.
What BoJ week means for correlated trades
A central bank decision is one shock that hits every pair with that currency in it. On Friday, a hawkish or cautious BoJ message moves USDJPY, EURJPY and GBPJPY at once, and with readings above 0.85 the three will tend to move the same way. Nobody knows the tone of the statement in advance, so the job here is not to call it. It is to know your exposure before the headline.
- Long USDJPY and long GBPJPY: both are short the yen. At 0.87, two trades risking 1% each swing like about 1.93% of risk, and both stops can be hit by the same BoJ headline.
- Long USDJPY and short EURUSD: both are long the dollar, but at -0.45 the combined swing is about 1.70%. Less overlap, and the two react to different decisions (BoJ Friday, ECB Thursday).
- Long USDJPY and short EURJPY: the yen legs cancel and what is left is roughly a long dollar, short euro view. If that is not your idea, do not build it by accident.
The swing figures use the standard two position formula: the square root of (1% squared plus 1% squared plus 2 times the correlation times 1% times 1%). Our guide to using correlation in forex walks through it.
Sizing USDJPY and yen crosses from one budget
USDJPY, EURJPY and GBPJPY all have the yen as the quote currency, so 1.0 lot (100,000 units) pays 1,000 yen per pip (0.01). At the October 28, 2026 ECB rate of 157.96 that is about $6.33 per pip for all three. The pip value is shared, but the daily range is not: over the last three months the average fix to fix move was 57 pips on USDJPY, 59 on EURJPY and 75 on GBPJPY, so GBPJPY usually needs a wider stop.
| Account (1% risk) | 20 pip stop | 40 pip stop | 60 pip stop |
|---|---|---|---|
| $1,000 ($10) | 0.07 lot ($8.86) | 0.03 lot ($7.60) | 0.02 lot ($7.60) |
| $5,000 ($50) | 0.39 lot ($49.38) | 0.19 lot ($48.11) | 0.13 lot ($49.38) |
| $10,000 ($100) | 0.78 lot ($98.76) | 0.39 lot ($98.76) | 0.26 lot ($98.76) |
| $25,000 ($250) | 1.97 lots ($249.43) | 0.98 lot ($248.16) | 0.65 lot ($246.90) |
Now the two pair case: a $10,000 account with one 1% budget of $100, a USDJPY long with a 40 pip stop and a GBPJPY long with a 50 pip stop.
| Plan | USDJPY (40 pip stop) | GBPJPY (50 pip stop) | Total at risk |
|---|---|---|---|
| Full 1% on each | 0.39 lot ($98.76) | 0.31 lot ($98.13) | $196.89 |
| One 1% budget, split 50/50 | 0.19 lot ($48.11) | 0.15 lot ($47.48) | $95.59 |
| Only the cleaner chart | 0.39 lot ($98.76) | none | $98.76 |
Lots are rounded down to the 0.01 step, so the dollar risk never goes above plan. Run your own numbers in the USDJPY lot size calculator, the GBPJPY lot size calculator or the EURJPY lot size calculator. Our USDJPY and GBPJPY lot size guide explains why the yen pip value changes with the rate.
A five step USDJPY check before the BoJ
- Open the forex correlation matrix and read USDJPY on the 1M and 3M tabs, not only 1Y.
- List every open yen trade. With readings above 0.75, treat them as one position.
- Ask which currency your idea is about. If it is the yen, one pair is enough.
- Give related trades one risk budget and split it, or keep only the cleanest chart.
- Expect wider ranges around Friday's decision and size from the stop, at about $6.33 per pip per 1.0 lot on USDJPY, EURJPY and GBPJPY at 157.96.

Frequently Asked Questions
What pairs are correlated with USDJPY?
On ECB reference rates to October 28, 2026, USDJPY moved most with the yen crosses over three months: GBPJPY 0.87, EURJPY 0.85, AUDJPY 0.78 and CHFJPY 0.75. Among dollar pairs the links were moderate: USDCHF 0.45, USDCAD 0.41, EURUSD -0.45 and GBPUSD -0.41.
Is USDJPY negatively correlated with EURUSD?
Yes, but less than it was. The correlation of daily returns was -0.55 over one year and -0.45 over three months to October 28, 2026. On rolling three month windows it was -0.68 in January and -0.73 at the end of April, then weakened to between -0.38 and -0.51 from July on.
Why is USDJPY moving with EURJPY and GBPJPY?
Because more of the daily move is coming from the yen itself: Bank of Japan rate expectations, safe haven buying during the AI stock selloff and intervention warnings from Tokyo. When the yen drives, every yen pair moves together. The three month USDJPY and EURJPY reading rose from 0.33 in April to 0.85 in October 2026.
When is the Bank of Japan decision in October 2026?
The BoJ meets on October 29 and 30, 2026 and publishes its decision and quarterly Outlook Report on Friday, October 30. The policy rate is 1.25% after the September hike, and all 16 economists in a CNBC survey expected a hold at this meeting.
Can I trade USDJPY and GBPJPY at the same time?
Yes, but a long in both is mostly one short yen bet. At a 0.87 correlation, two trades risking 1% each swing like about 1.93% of risk, and one BoJ headline can hit both stops. Give them one risk budget and split it, or trade only the cleaner chart.
What is the pip value of USDJPY?
The yen is the quote currency, so 1.0 lot (100,000 units) pays 1,000 yen per pip (0.01). At the October 28, 2026 ECB rate of 157.96 that is about $6.33 per pip, the same as on EURJPY and GBPJPY.
