What is USDJPY?

USDJPY is the US dollar quoted in Japanese yen: the price tells you how many JPY one USD buys. USD is the base currency and JPY is the quote currency, which is why profit and loss on USDJPY is booked in JPY first.

USDJPY pip value and contract size

1.00 standard lot of USDJPY is 100,000 USD. One pip is 0.01, because JPY pairs are quoted to 2 or 3 decimals. Pip value for 1.00 lot = 100,000 × 0.01 = ¥1,000 per pip, paid in Japanese yen. That is ¥100 per pip on a mini lot (0.10) and ¥10 on a micro lot (0.01).

For a US dollar account, divide the Japanese yen pip value by the USDJPY price: pip value in USD = ¥1,000 ÷ USDJPY price for 1.00 lot. The calculator above does this with the latest rate.

How to calculate USDJPY lot size

The calculator uses one formula on every market: lots = risk money ÷ (stop in pips × value of 1.00 lot per pip).

Example: a ¥1,000,000 account risking 1% (¥10,000) with a 20 pip stop on USDJPY: ¥10,000 ÷ (20 × ¥1,000) = 0.5 lots.

Double the stop and the lot size halves, with the same ¥10,000 at risk. That is the whole point of sizing from the stop instead of picking a lot size first.

How to use the USDJPY lot size calculator

  1. Enter your account size and pick your account currency. Live FX rates convert the result if your account is in another currency.
  2. Set the percent of the account you accept to lose on this trade (1% is a common default) and your stop loss in pips, measured from entry to stop on the USDJPY chart.
  3. Read Lots to open and type that number in MT4 New Order. Brokers round to 0.01, so round down, never up.

Common USDJPY position sizing mistakes

  • Assuming every pair pays $10 per pip. That is only true for pairs quoted in USD on a USD account. USDJPY is quoted in JPY, so its USD pip value moves with the exchange rate.
  • Confusing pips with price. On USDJPY a 20 pip stop is a 0.2 price move.
  • Picking the lot size first and placing the stop where it fits the lot. Place the stop where the trade idea is wrong, then size.
  • Forgetting spread and slippage. The stop can be hit before price reaches your level, so leave a margin or risk slightly less.

Frequently Asked Questions

There is no fixed lot size for USDJPY; it comes from your risk and your stop. Lots = risk money ÷ (stop in pips × ¥1,000 per pip for 1.00 lot). Example: a ¥1,000,000 account risking 1% (¥10,000) with a 20 pip stop on USDJPY: ¥10,000 ÷ (20 × ¥1,000) = 0.5 lots.
0.01 lot of USDJPY is 1,000 USD, so one pip is worth ¥10 (pip size 0.01). For a US dollar account, divide the Japanese yen pip value by the USDJPY price: pip value in USD = ¥1,000 ÷ USDJPY price for 1.00 lot. The calculator above does this with the latest rate.
With the preset specs, 1.00 lot of USDJPY is worth ¥1,000 per pip, 0.10 lot ¥100 and 0.01 lot ¥10. For a US dollar account, divide the Japanese yen pip value by the USDJPY price: pip value in USD = ¥1,000 ÷ USDJPY price for 1.00 lot. The calculator above does this with the latest rate.
