What is BTCUSD?

BTCUSD is Bitcoin quoted in US dollars, traded on MT4 as a crypto CFD.

BTCUSD point value and contract size

The preset contract is 1 coin per 1.00 lot, and one point is a 1.00 move in price ($1). So 1.00 lot of BTCUSD gains or loses $1 per point, 0.10 lot $0.10 and 0.01 lot $0.01. Your stop can be a fraction of a point, for example 0.50.

How to calculate BTCUSD lot size

The calculator uses one formula on every market: lots = risk money ÷ (stop in points × value of 1.00 lot per point).

Example: a $10,000 account risking 1% ($100) with a 500 point stop on BTCUSD: $100 ÷ (500 × $1) = 0.2 lots.

Double the stop and the lot size halves, with the same $100 at risk. That is the whole point of sizing from the stop instead of picking a lot size first.

How to use the BTCUSD lot size calculator

  1. Enter your account size and pick your account currency. Live FX rates convert the result if your account is in another currency.
  2. Set the percent of the account you accept to lose on this trade (1% is a common default) and your stop loss in points, measured from entry to stop on the BTCUSD chart.
  3. Check Tick value in MT4 Market Watch, Specification for BTCUSD. If it differs from the preset, type it in, then read Lots to open and round down to your broker's lot step.

Common BTCUSD position sizing mistakes

  • Copying another broker's lot specs. BTCUSD contract size and tick value vary by broker, so a lot size from a forum post can be far off on your account.
  • Confusing points with price. On BTCUSD one point is 1.00 of price; check how your broker displays it.
  • Picking the lot size first and placing the stop where it fits the lot. Place the stop where the trade idea is wrong, then size.
  • Forgetting spread and slippage. The stop can be hit before price reaches your level, so leave a margin or risk slightly less.

The preset is 1 coin per 1.00 lot, so 0.01 lot is 0.01 coin and 10 lots is 10 coins. Check Contract size in MT4 Specification, since brokers differ.
