What is NATGAS?

NATGAS is a CFD on US natural gas, quoted in US dollars per MMBtu.

NATGAS point value and contract size

The preset contract is 10,000 MMBtu per 1.00 lot with $10 per point, so one point is a 0.001 move in price and a full 1.00 move in price is worth $10,000 on 1.00 lot, $1,000 on 0.10 lot and $100 on 0.01 lot.

How to calculate NATGAS lot size

The calculator uses one formula on every market: lots = risk money ÷ (stop in points × value of 1.00 lot per point).

Example: a $10,000 account risking 1% ($100) with a 20 point stop on NATGAS: $100 ÷ (20 × $10) = 0.5 lots.

Double the stop and the lot size halves, with the same $100 at risk. That is the whole point of sizing from the stop instead of picking a lot size first.

How to use the NATGAS lot size calculator

  1. Enter your account size and pick your account currency. Live FX rates convert the result if your account is in another currency.
  2. Set the percent of the account you accept to lose on this trade (1% is a common default) and your stop loss in points, measured from entry to stop on the NATGAS chart.
  3. Check Tick value in MT4 Market Watch, Specification for NATGAS. If it differs from the preset, type it in, then read Lots to open and round down to your broker's lot step.

Common NATGAS position sizing mistakes

  • Copying another broker's lot specs. NATGAS contract size and tick value vary by broker, so a lot size from a forum post can be far off on your account.
  • Confusing points with price. On NATGAS one point is 0.001 of price, not 1.00.
  • Picking the lot size first and placing the stop where it fits the lot. Place the stop where the trade idea is wrong, then size.
  • Forgetting spread and slippage. The stop can be hit before price reaches your level, so leave a margin or risk slightly less.

Educational content, not investment advice. Trading leveraged products such as CFDs and forex carries a high risk of losing money.

Frequently Asked Questions

There is no fixed lot size for NATGAS; it comes from your risk and your stop. Lots = risk money ÷ (stop in points × $10 per point for 1.00 lot). Example: a $10,000 account risking 1% ($100) with a 20 point stop on NATGAS: $100 ÷ (20 × $10) = 0.5 lots.
With the preset, 0.01 lot of NATGAS is worth $0.10 per point, which is $100 for every 1.00 move in price. A 10.00 move is $1,000 on 0.01 lot.
With the preset specs, 1.00 lot of NATGAS is worth $10 per point, 0.10 lot $1 and 0.01 lot $0.10. If your broker shows another Tick value in MT4 Specification, use that number.
Decide how much money you accept to lose (for example 1% of the account), measure your stop in points from entry, then divide: risk ÷ (stop × value of 1.00 lot per point). This page does it for you and converts to your account currency with live rates.
The preset is 10,000 MMBtu per 1.00 lot, so 0.01 lot is 100 MMBtu. Check Contract size in MT4 Specification, since brokers differ.
No. Brokers can set different contract sizes, tick values and lot steps for NATGAS. Open MT4 Market Watch, right click NATGAS, choose Specification, and type the Tick value here if it differs from the preset. Most brokers round lots to 0.01.
