What is GBPUSD?

GBPUSD is the British pound quoted in US dollars: the price tells you how many USD one GBP buys. GBP is the base currency and USD is the quote currency, which is why profit and loss on GBPUSD is booked in USD first.

GBPUSD pip value and contract size

1.00 standard lot of GBPUSD is 100,000 GBP. One pip is 0.0001. Pip value for 1.00 lot = 100,000 × 0.0001 = $10 per pip, paid in US dollars. That is $1 per pip on a mini lot (0.10) and $0.10 on a micro lot (0.01).

For a US dollar account no conversion is needed: $10 per pip on 1.00 lot, $1 on 0.10 lot and $0.10 on 0.01 lot.

How to calculate GBPUSD lot size

The calculator uses one formula on every market: lots = risk money ÷ (stop in pips × value of 1.00 lot per pip).

Example: a $10,000 account risking 1% ($100) with a 20 pip stop on GBPUSD: $100 ÷ (20 × $10) = 0.5 lots.

Double the stop and the lot size halves, with the same $100 at risk. That is the whole point of sizing from the stop instead of picking a lot size first.

How to use the GBPUSD lot size calculator

  1. Enter your account size and pick your account currency. Live FX rates convert the result if your account is in another currency.
  2. Set the percent of the account you accept to lose on this trade (1% is a common default) and your stop loss in pips, measured from entry to stop on the GBPUSD chart.
  3. Read Lots to open and type that number in MT4 New Order. Brokers round to 0.01, so round down, never up.

Common GBPUSD position sizing mistakes

  • Assuming every pair pays $10 per pip. That is only true for pairs quoted in USD on a USD account. GBPUSD is one of them, but crosses and USD base pairs are not.
  • Confusing pips with price. On GBPUSD a 20 pip stop is a 0.002 price move.
  • Picking the lot size first and placing the stop where it fits the lot. Place the stop where the trade idea is wrong, then size.
  • Forgetting spread and slippage. The stop can be hit before price reaches your level, so leave a margin or risk slightly less.
